Maha Shivratri comes in the month of Phagun by Hindu calender and this year its date of Maha Shivratri 2010 is 12th February. Hindu celebrates this festival and its a famous Indian festival. It celebrates in the Night of Moon in Krishna Paksh of Hindu calender. 
Many people do fast on the occasion of Shivratri. by the reference of Hindu Mythologies the Festival Shivratri is the day when Lord Shiva ( Shankar Bhagwan) got married to goddess Parvati. People celebrate this festivals due to this fact.
Some people also said that Shivratri is the night when Lord Shiv performed Tandav Nritya ( Dance).
