India celebrates its Independence Day on August 15 every year. The country became independent on 15th August 1947 and since then, the day is declared as the gazette holiday all over the country. Independence Day is the national holiday and flagship event occurs in New Delhi when the Prime Minister of India hoists the Indian national flag at Red Fort.
The celebrations
The hoisting of the national flag is then followed by national broadcast of the speech delivered by the Prime Minister. The whole day is celebrated with great devotion and people, institutes conduct flag hoisting ceremonies, cultural events and parades.

Kite flying is the favorite sport/activity that is taken up on this day that truly symbolizes and represents freedom and independence. The whole sky is filled with innumerable colorful kites that are flown from the fields and rooftops to highlight the free spirit of the country.
Kites of different sizes, shades and styles are flown by the residents in huge numbers. Red Fort is the important place as it is the spot where Jawahar Lal Nehru first unveiled the Indian national flag on 15th August 1947.

This day is the one when people pay homepage and tribute to the freedom fighters and leaders who fought whole heartedly for the country’s freedom. The era leading up to this day is the time when the main governmental buildings and institutes are beautifully illuminated with lights and tricolor flutters from educational institutions, offices and homes.
