Lohri is India’s well renowned harvest festival that is celebrated on January 13 (in the month of Paush) every year in North India, especially Indian state of Punjab. The festival is celebrated a day before the Makar Sankranti falls. This is the day when the Earth moves towards the sun that marks arrival of Uttarayan, also known as Makar Sankranti. The festival concords with Tamil Nadu’s Pongal festival, Bengal & Kerala’s Makar Sankranti, Assam’s Magha Bihu and Thai Pongal in Kerala.
This time, India is going to celebrate Lohri festival with pomp and shows on 13th January 2011.
Lohri festival holds special significance to the newly wed couples as it marks fertility to them and their newly born baby. People celebrate Lohri festival by lighting bonfire. They gather around it and throw til, popcorns and puffed rice to the flames of bonfire as an offering to the God of Fire while wishing affluence and prosperity. People express their joys by dancing and singing their traditional folk songs.
People also enjoy kite flying during Lohri festival. In some states including Punjab, people express happiness of lohri by indulging kite flying activity with fellow friends.
